Wellington's Fully Fenced Dog Park #2 Ian Galloway Park

from Exciting news! 3/02/2016 Wellington is getting another fully fenced dog park! The first one at Cog Park, Evans Bay, although relatively small, has been welcomed by dog owners and this one at Ian Galloway Park will be too I'm sure! Here's what the Open Space & Parks Manager from WCC has to say.......... "Work on the fenced dog-exercise area at Ian Galloway Park will be starting next week. The dog exercise area has been shifted to the east of the park, next to Curtis Street. The new area is being fully fenced, with three double gates – one next to the car park, the other off Curtis Street and the other on the west side next to the BMX track. Please see the below (and attached) landscape plan. Many thanks to those of you who have provided input to the final plan. We know that drainage will be a challenge for us all this winter. If funding is available after the fencing has been completed, we are hoping to try some grass mounds to try to alleviate some of the hollows and wet spots. Please bear with us as works progress and we hope you enjoy the new fenced dog exercise area. Some interesting history on Ian Galloway Park, named after Ian Galloway who was a former Director of Parks and Recreation. The site was the Western Landfill or Wilton Tip as it was known, operated between 1946-1973. This explains the uneven surface and drainage issues. |

"Capital Canine News – a newsletter for registered dog owners in Wellington. Designed to keep you informed about dog registration, Council dog policy, activities for dogs in the city, and to provide you with tips about caring for your pet. Have your say on plans for dog areas. As part of a new plan for managing some suburban reserves, the Council is seeking comments on the idea of relocating the dog exercise area at Ian Galloway Park in Wilton next to the bike track and skate park. This may also become a fully fenced dog area". Above photo view north, Curtis Street / Wilton Road on the right. Roadside Fence upper right of photo :) - Penny Photo view towards the northeast from the Car Park Roadside fence can be seen alongside Wilton Road. - Penny This photo gives a better idea of the length of the proposed relocated Dog Exercise Area. - Penny The WCC Continues "We are also considering installing a fully fenced dog exercise area at Sinclair Park in Houghton Valley between the school and the play area. This would be subject to external funding and making sure other park users have easy access through the park. Consultation on this runs until December 5, 2014." And ... From the Draft Suburban Reserves Management Plan 2014 3.3.3 Dog exercise areas page 56 Ian Galloway Park "There has been discussion around relocating the dog exercise area in Ian Galloway Park to the adjoining larger training area to the north. The site has existing fencing that could be extended. The site has the potential to be a fully-fenced dog exercise area. There are opportunities to fund this with support from the wider community. Action - Relocate the dog exercise area within Ian Galloway Park." (Photos are Penny's taken 20th June 2014). Updates to Follow... Grasslees Reserve Dog Exercise Area

Grasslees Reserve Dog Exercise Area - no not Newlands .... but nearby ! a 10min or so drive... Grasslees Reserve is getting a $650,000 makeover ! This 2 hectare reserve is adjacent to Tawa Pool. And in the words of the Council "... The park is bounded on the western edge by Main Road , the main link between Tawa and Porirua." This Boundary along side the Main Road requires a Dog Proof fence to keep Dogs Safe ! Google WCC Have Your Say Grasslees Reserve Makeover to check out the Map / Concept Landscape Plan These plans include a new Picnic and BBQ Area along side the Off Leash Dog Exercise Area ! This in itself is a very good reason to Fully enclose the Dog Park ! So please do send online Feedback on this for Our Dogs Sakes! Last chance for Feedback as it closes today at 5pm, Friday the 14th of December 2012 ! the Dogs Thank You ! - Penny the Dog Walker - Loose leash Dog Walking Have you any thoughts on this makeover etc... If you have found this blog after 14th Dec, WCC says " There will be another opportunity to comment before the plan is finalised. so watch this space ! - Penny Update: Monday 18th February 2013 Grasslees Reserve upgrade The Council has received 45 submissions from Tawa residents on its
plans for a major upgrade for the Grasslees Reserve. We are hoping to be
able to respond to submitters by the end of February. The Council is considering building new paths and a bridge to better
integrate the two halves of the park and improve links to the Porirua
Stream. The old skate rink would be redeveloped as an area for young
children on wheels, bikes and scooters. There would be new toilets, a
basketball court and more parking. Improvements are also planned for the
picnic area – with new plantings – and a bigger play area. The
work will be done this year, funded by the Plimmer Bequest. source: February Issue of "Branch Out" WCC's magazine watch this space for further updates - Penny the Dog Walker ! Re: Grasslees Reserve Concept Landscape Plan source WCC email dated 23 April 2013 * Dog Exercise Area Nearly half of the submissions (numbering 44 in total ) requested fencing off the dog exercise area, especially along the Main Road boundary. Some submitters also wanted the dog exercise area fully fenced including fencing off from the picnic and play areas. In response to the feedback and concerns, the Council will install a fence along the Main Road boundary. This will be a 1m high chainlink fence in the middle of shrub planting. This will prevent dogs ( and children ) from being able to easily access Main Road and the planting will eventually screen the fence to create a more attractive and unobtrusive appearance. We do not intend to fully fence off the dog exercise area from the rest of the Reserve. We do not wish to make this area exclusive as there is a desire from the wider community for the continuing ability to use this space. It is worth noting that in accordance with the Council's Dog Control Policy 2009, dogs are to be kept under control at all times, including in dog exercise areas. If you have any further Queries or feedback about the Grasslees Reserve Upgrade, please feel free to contact, David Halliday email: [email protected] Telephone: 04 803 8890 or 021 227 8890 David Halliday Walkways and Reserves Officers Community Engagement Parks, Sport and Recreation Business Unit ----------------------------------------------------------------- Well at least the Roadside is to be fenced with a 1m high chainlink fence... but there is no mention of gated entrances along the roadside ! So here's hoping that this fence has "wings" turning back into the park, along side each pathway to encourage dogs... And children, to turn back into the park, rather that being able to pop around the ends of the roadside fence, onto the roadway ! ( the stairs at the north entrance already have a handrail... adding chainlink to this handrail should be straight forward ! ) What do you think ? Penny the Dog Walker. |
